Cananga odorata (Lam.) Hook.f. & Thomson
FamilyAnnonaceae
EspañolCananga
AlsoYlang-ylang, Ilang-ilang, Perfume tree, Kenanga

A medium-sized evergreen tree, usually 10–20 m tall, with pale grey bark and long, drooping branchlets that give it an irregular crown. The hanging flowers open green and turn pale yellow as they mature, and are strongly fragrant. The essential oil distilled from the flowers is the ylang-ylang of perfumery.

Sourced · see Record tab Least Concern (IUCN, 2021) · IUCN
Worth knowingThe flowers are most fragrant 15–20 days after opening, once they have changed colour from green to yellow; the Comoro Islands and Madagascar produce an estimated 80% of the world's ylang-ylang oil.
