    How the register works

    One number, one tree, for the life of the tree.

    Each tagged tree keeps its number permanently. When a tree dies, its number is retired with it and its record stays in the register; a replacement is planted under a new number. That way the register is also a history, and nothing planted here is ever quietly forgotten.
