A fast-growing evergreen shrub or small tree of the legume family with prickly stems and feathery, fern-like bipinnate foliage. Its flowers, carried through much of the year, have five petals and long protruding stamens; the wild type is orange-red and yellow, but yellow (f. flava) and pink (f. rosea) forms are also grown. It is the national flower of Barbados and attracts hummingbirds and butterflies.
