A small evergreen tree with a short straight trunk and a dense, pyramidal crown of long, glossy, dark green leaves. Clusters of small white flowers are followed by rounded, pointed fruits up to 9 cm wide that ripen from pale orange to deep yellow, with a sour pulp used for preserves and jams. A relative of the purple mangosteen, it is a source of a yellow dye from its latex.

Worth knowingIts older botanical names, Garcinia tinctoria and Xanthochymus pictorius, both refer to the yellow pigment obtained from the tree.
