A fast-growing, upright tree of the custard-apple family with thin, papery leaves and small greenish-yellow flowers that give off a sweet, yeasty scent to attract the beetles that pollinate them. The knobbly aggregate fruit ripens yellow and is covered in soft pointed protuberances; inside is white, soft, sweet, custard-like pulp around 20–50 seeds. Trees grown from seed can bear within three to four years.

Worth knowingThe flowers smell of yeast during their female phase, an adaptation to beetle pollination, and growers sometimes hand-pollinate to improve fruit set. A single tree can carry 25–50 fruits a year.
