A fast-growing tree of humid lowland forest that can reach 40 m with a straight, smooth, unbuttressed trunk and a dense rounded crown. Yellow, fragrant flowers appear in terminal panicles from March to June, followed by a thick three-grooved capsule. It often grows in pure stands and is planted for its light, easily worked timber.

Worth knowingSeeds need no pre-treatment and germinate at 85–90 percent in the greenhouse, which is part of why it is a popular reforestation tree in Central America.
