Bougainvilleas are thorny woody vines with a scrambling habit in the four-o'clock family. The true flowers are small, tubular and usually white; the colour comes from three papery bracts around each cluster of flowers, which in this form are white. They bloom on new growth through much of the year and tolerate drought and poor, dry soils once established.

Worth knowingThe colour of a bougainvillea is not in its flowers, which are small and white, but in the three papery bracts that surround them.
