A tall tree of the mahogany family, reaching 12–45 m, with pinnate leaves of 5–9 pairs of lance-shaped leaflets. Small whitish flowers are borne in clusters at the branch tips, followed by brown egg-shaped woody capsules dotted with lenticels. In Costa Rica it grows in very wet montane forest and has been used in riverbank restoration plantings.
