An evergreen tree of the myrtle family with a short thick trunk, flaking pink-grey bark and a wide spreading crown. Clusters of fragrant yellowish-white flowers with many stamens are followed by bell-shaped, waxy fruits, most often light red but green or white in some forms, with crisp, spongy, watery flesh and a mild flavour. It is planted for fruit, shade and ornament.
