A small, open, spreading evergreen tree 3 to 6 m tall, usually with sharp thorns on its twigs and glossy leaves that emerge reddish and mature dark green. The mildly fragrant flowers open white above and purplish beneath from reddish buds, and can appear year-round in warm climates. The oval, very aromatic yellow fruit has the familiar nipple at its tip and is high in vitamin C.
