Crown of thorns is a low, spiny succulent shrub of the spurge family with grey stems densely armed with sharp thorns and small bright green leaves clustered near the tips. Its true flowers are tiny, but they sit within pairs of long-lasting, brightly coloured bracts, usually red, sometimes pink, salmon, yellow or white, produced year-round in tropical climates. Like other spurges, all parts carry a milky latex that irritates the skin.

Worth knowingThe species name honours Baron Milius, governor of the island of Bourbon (Réunion), who introduced the plant to France in 1821; Thai growers have since bred forms with exceptionally large, colourful bracts.
