A solitary, slender, relatively slow-growing palm of medium size, known for the fuzzy, powdery red-brown crownshaft that contrasts with its white, waxy trunk. The glossy pinnate leaves have dark green, drooping leaflets. In the wild it is known from only one rainforest site in northwest Madagascar.

Worth knowingThe species name leptocheilos comes from Latin words meaning 'thin lip', but it is the fuzzy red leaf sheaths that give the palm its two common names, teddy bear palm and redneck palm.
