A massive solitary fan palm that can reach 27 m with a trunk up to 90 cm across, carrying enormous fan leaves up to 6 m wide on spiny stalks up to 4 m long. After roughly 80 years it flowers once, producing the largest inflorescence in the plant kingdom, a terminal panicle about 9 m tall holding some 24 million small flowers, and then dies after the fruit ripens.
