A woody climbing aroid with huge, glossy, heart-shaped leaves that develop deep lobes and natural holes as the plant matures. In the wild it begins life on the forest floor and then climbs tree trunks with the help of aerial roots, reaching 20 m or more. It produces a creamy-white arum-type flower followed by a scaly, cone-like fruit that is edible when fully ripe and tastes of banana and pineapple.
