Surinam Cherry

A dense, multi-stemmed shrub or small tree with thin peeling bark and small glossy aromatic leaves that are reddish when young. Small fragrant white flowers in spring are followed by ribbed orange-red berries that look like little pumpkins and are edible and high in vitamin C. It shears well and is often grown as a hedge, but has become invasive in Florida.
