A large canopy tree of the legume family, known in Costa Rica as guapinol, which can exceed 30 m with a well-formed trunk clear for 12 to 24 m and buttressed at the base in old trees. Its seed pods hold an edible pulp. The tree exudes a rosin-like gum sold as South American copal, and its very durable, reddish-brown timber is used for flooring, tool handles and furniture.
