A large tropical hardwood of the mahogany family, not a true cedar, with a straight cylindrical trunk that can exceed 30 m and rough, fissured reddish-brown bark. Its pinnate leaves and greenish-white flowers smell of garlic, while the heartwood carries the distinctive cedar-like scent that made it the classic wood for cigar boxes. The timber is durable, termite resistant and easy to work, and is prized for fine furniture, musical instruments and boats.

Worth knowingThe heartwood's volatile oils give the wood its cedar smell and help repel termites, but the same oils can restrict its use in items such as clock cases.
