A medium to large evergreen tree with a rounded crown and leathery, dark green leaves that smell faintly of aniseed when crushed. Small yellow-green flowers are followed by the familiar pear-shaped fruit, a single-seeded berry with buttery, oil-rich flesh. Three ecological races are recognised: Mexican, Guatemalan and West Indian; the West Indian race, to which 'Simmonds' belongs, comes from the tropical lowlands and suits hot, humid climates.
