A medium-sized, fast-growing legume tree with a short, low-branching trunk, smooth grey bark and a dense rounded crown that becomes spreading and irregular with age. It carries racemes of golden-yellow flowers at the branch tips from just two or three years old, followed by long flat pods. Widely planted across the tropics as a roadside and shade tree, it has also become naturalised in many places and is rated a high weed risk in Hawaii and the Pacific.

Worth knowingThe dark heartwood is sold as 'pheasantwood' for turnery and carving, and the tree has grown on the grounds of Iolani Palace in Honolulu since its introduction to Hawaii around 1865.
