Diospyros nigra (J.F.Gmel.) Perr.
FamilyEbenaceae
EspañolZapote negro
AlsoBlack sapote, Chocolate pudding fruit

A medium to large evergreen tree of the ebony family with glossy, leathery, dark green leaves and small white tubular flowers. Its round green fruits soften and turn brown-black when ripe, and the dark, sweet pulp has the texture and colour of chocolate pudding. Trees are usually dioecious, so some produce only male flowers and never fruit.

Sourced · see Record tab Least Concern (IUCN Red List, via GBIF). · IUCN
Worth knowingThe ripe pulp is so dark and smooth that the fruit is nicknamed 'chocolate pudding fruit'.
