A tall, single-trunked palm with a smooth concrete-grey trunk marked by closely spaced rings and often a bulge around its middle. A glossy green crownshaft up to 2 m long sits below a crown of large feather-like fronds, which drop cleanly on their own when they die. It is one of the classic avenue palms of the tropical Americas.
