A large canopy tree of the cashew family that can reach about 35 m, with narrow buttress flanges at the base and a clear cylindrical trunk for two-thirds or more of its height. It is best known for its very hard, dense timber, russet to reddish-brown with dark longitudinal bands, traded as goncalo alves. In Guanacaste it now survives mainly as scattered trees in fragmented forest.

Worth knowingThe wood is exceptionally hard, with a Janka hardness of 1,910–2,160 lb, and its irregular dark longitudinal bands give the timber a striking figure.
