A medium to large deciduous tree with palmately compound leaves and large trumpet-shaped flowers in pink or white. In Costa Rica it drops its leaves in the dry season and flowers on bare branches after a dry spell, then carpets the ground below with fallen blooms. It is a common roadside and pasture tree in Guanacaste and is also valued for its timber.

Worth knowingA three-year study of 32 trees in Costa Rica found that flowering requires both a dry period and a wide daily temperature swing, which is why the trees bloom so reliably at the height of the Guanacaste dry season.
