A rounded evergreen tree of the lychee family, grown for its fruit: an egg-shaped red capsule covered in soft, tapering hairs up to 2 cm long, enclosing translucent white, sweet flesh around a single seed. Its compound leaves are spirally arranged with papery elliptic leaflets, and the small cream to yellow-green flowers are borne in spike-like clusters. The name comes from the Malay word rambut, meaning hair.
