A large evergreen tree of wet lowland tropical rainforest. Its smooth bark peels in long strips, exposing bright green new bark that darkens through blue, purple, orange and maroon, so a single trunk shows several colours at once. It is among the fastest-growing trees in the world, recorded reaching 10 m in under 18 months and 30 m in seven years in Hawaii.
