A large deciduous tree with an upright, rounded crown and smooth, mottled bark that peels with age. In early to mid-summer it carries foot-long terminal panicles of bright pink to lavender flowers, each about 7 cm across with six crinkled petals. The large leathery leaves turn red before dropping.
