A tree of the mallow family, related to the kapok and ceiba trees, that grows in wet tropical forest across Central and South America. In Panama it is known as barrigón (pot-bellied) and is regarded as typical of more mature forest rather than young secondary growth.

Worth knowingPollen of this tree was identified in nineteenth-century orchid-bee nests recovered from a cathedral in Panama, showing it was part of the mature forest there in the late 1800s.
