A medium-sized semi-deciduous tree with an umbrella-shaped crown, a straight trunk and smooth light grey bark. When leafless it covers itself in star-like flowers that open red and through pink to peach. The flowers are followed by long, cylindrical woody pods filled with a dark, sticky, strong-smelling pulp that is used in Central America as a tonic drink.

Worth knowingThe pods are called 'stinking toe' in English for the smell of their pulp, yet in Central America that same pulp, carao, is drunk with milk as a traditional iron tonic.
