A small deciduous tree with thick, blunt, sausage-like grey-green branches arranged in a vase or umbrella shape, and large coarse leaves clustered at the branch tips. From early summer into autumn it bears intensely fragrant, spiral-shaped flowers in pink, red, white or yellow. Milky sap runs from any cut surface, and the tree drops its leaves in the dry season.

Worth knowingThe flowers are strongly scented and attract sphinx moths, yet produce no nectar; the moths are lured to pollinate them without reward. The genus is named after the French botanist Charles Plumier.
