A slow-growing solitary fan palm from Cuba, named for the dense skirt or petticoat of dried leaves it keeps beneath the crown when young; as it ages the old leaves fall to reveal a smooth, slender stem. The nearly stalkless fan leaves are 2–3 m wide and spirally arranged. It is a popular landscape palm in south Florida and other warm climates.

Worth knowingThe genus is named after the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, and the species name macroglossa means 'large tongue', a reference to its large leaves.
