A vigorous perennial climbing vine that can exceed 30 m in length, holding on with tendrils and flowering on new growth. The fragrant flowers, 6–8 cm across, have five petals and sepals beneath a fringe of purple-and-white filaments, and are followed by round purple or yellow fruits filled with juicy, aromatic pulp around black seeds. Two forms are grown, the purple and the yellow passion fruit, now treated as one species.
