Noni is a small evergreen tree of the coffee family with large, glossy, opposite leaves and heads of small white flowers that develop into knobbly, yellowish-white fruits. The ripe fruit is soft and gives off a strong, cheese-like smell, which is why it is also called cheese fruit. It is extremely tough, growing from shade to full sun on poor, salty or waterlogged soils, and was carried across the Pacific by Polynesian settlers for its medicinal and dye uses.
