An evergreen tree in the rose family with a rounded crown of large, dark green, glossy leaves, cultivated in Asia for at least a thousand years. It flowers in autumn and early winter in fragrant white panicles and ripens its small yellow to orange fruits in late winter and spring. The sweet-tart fruit is eaten fresh or made into jams and sauces.
