Neem is an evergreen tree of the mahogany family with a straight trunk, furrowed bark and a dense, rounded crown. Its pinnate leaves are clustered towards the branch ends and emerge reddish before turning green; small, slightly scented white flowers hang in long branched clusters and are followed by small yellow, olive-like fruits. The tree is best known for azadirachtin, an insect-antifeedant compound in its seeds that is used as a natural insecticide, and it is held sacred in Hindu tradition.

Worth knowingA mature neem may live for more than 200 years and produce 30–50 kg of fruit a year; its twigs are widely used as natural toothbrushes across South and Southeast Asia.
