A small evergreen tree of savannas and dry forest with grey to dark chocolate fissured bark and leathery opposite leaves. Its flowers open yellow and age to red-orange, and instead of nectar they offer oils that are collected by specialised bees. The small yellow fruits, ripening mostly in August and September, are eaten fresh and made into drinks and sweets and have been used by people in the region for two to three thousand years.

Worth knowingNance flowers offer oil rather than nectar, and the fruit contains 90–240 mg of vitamin C per 100 g; archaeological finds show it has been used for 2,000–3,000 years.
