Miracle Fruit

A slow-growing large shrub or small bushy tree from West Africa, reaching about 6 m in its native habitat but usually much smaller in cultivation. Its small scarlet berries contain miraculin, a taste-modifying protein that makes sour or bitter foods taste sweet for a time after the pulp is eaten. In West Africa the fruits are traditionally chewed before meals to make stale food taste better.
