A small deciduous fruit tree of the rose family, grown since at least 2000 BC, with a rounded crown of upward-growing branches. Fragrant pink five-petalled flowers open in spring before the leaves, and are followed in summer by juicy yellow to orange fruit tinged with red around a large, rough stone. A genetic variation produces the smooth-skinned nectarine instead of the fuzzy peach.
