An evergreen persimmon relative with a conical crown and glossy, leathery leaves that are silvery and hairy underneath and pinkish when young. Its round fruits are covered in reddish-brown velvet, with creamy white to yellow, sweet, aromatic flesh that gives off a strong cheese-like smell. It is grown as a fruit and shade tree and is noted for standing up well to typhoons.

Worth knowingThe species is named for Francisco Manuel Blanco, a Spanish friar who documented the flora of the Philippines; in the wild its fruits are eaten by monkeys and squirrels, which disperse the seeds.
