A clump-forming perennial grass whose fine, arching, slightly prickly leaves smell strongly of lemon when crushed. It rarely flowers in cultivation. The leaves and swollen stem bases flavour Indian and South-east Asian cooking, and the essential oil is used in perfumes and herbal medicine.
