A small tree of the wood-sorrel family and close relative of the star fruit (carambola), bearing oblong, bluntly angled fruits directly on the trunk and older branches. The fruit is very sour and is usually pickled or used as a souring agent in cooking. It is grown in home gardens across the tropics, from the Philippines to the Caribbean coast of Colombia.

Worth knowingLinnaeus's original description in Species Plantarum (1753) already noted the tree's habit of fruiting from its bare trunk: 'caudice nudo fructificante'.
