The giant dioon is a cycad, an ancient palm-like plant that is neither palm nor fern, and one of the tallest cycads in the world. It forms a trunk topped by a rosette of stiff, arching, blue-green pinnate leaves, each with 150–250 narrow, glossy leaflets edged with small teeth. Plants are either male or female, and the female cones are among the largest cones of any living plant. Its spiny leaflets mean it is best planted away from paths.
