A tall canopy tree of the trumpet-tree family, native to wet tropical forest from Mexico to Peru. Like its relatives it flowers in a burst of trumpet-shaped blossoms that appear ahead of the leaves, and the yellow-flowered trumpet trees to which it belongs were moved from Tabebuia to Handroanthus in 2007. Its dense wood has long been valued in Panama, where a cathedral sculpture of Saint Andrew was confirmed by microscopic analysis to be carved from Handroanthus wood most similar to guayacan.

Worth knowingChurchgoers in Panama believed a cathedral sculpture of Saint Andrew was carved from guayacan; Smithsonian wood anatomists examined it under the microscope and found its features matched Handroanthus, most closely guayacan.
