A woody evergreen shrub of the mallow family, up to about 5 m tall, with glossy, dark green, toothed leaves. The large funnel-shaped flowers, up to 15 cm across with a prominent central column of stamens, each last only a day but are produced through much of the year in red, pink, yellow, orange, white and many blends. It attracts butterflies and hummingbirds and is widely used for hedges and accent planting.
