A woody, deciduous climbing vine that clings by tendrils, with large, lobed, toothed leaves and peeling bark. Small fragrant flowers in spring give way to hanging bunches of oval berries, green, red or deep purple with a powdery bloom. It is the source of most table grapes, raisins and wine, and its species name means 'wine-bearing'.
