A vigorous climbing passion vine of the wet tropics, grown from sea level to about 1,200 m in Colombia and up to 2,500 m elsewhere in tropical America. Its fruit is eaten fresh and sold in markets across tropical America, including French Guiana, where it is known as barbadine.
