An evergreen shrub of the coffee family grown the world over for its intensely fragrant, waxy, creamy white flowers set against glossy dark green leaves. The buds unfurl from a spiral, and the flowers, often double in garden forms, appear through spring and summer. Orange berries follow and have traditionally been used to make a yellow dye.

Worth knowingThe genus is named after Alexander Garden, a Scottish-born naturalist and physician of colonial Charleston, and the plant's orange fruits yield the yellow colouring used in East Asian foods.
