A handsome solitary fan palm with a single slender trunk and a crown of large, pleated, light green fan leaves up to 1.8 m across, held on long waxy stalks. Branched flower clusters bear many small fragrant yellow flowers, followed by round fruits that ripen from green to glossy black. It is widely planted along roadsides and in gardens across the tropics.
