Emperor's candlesticks is a fast-growing, spreading shrub of the pea family with large pinnate leaves and tall, erect spikes of golden-yellow flowers. The spikes open from the bottom up, so the open yellow flowers below and the orange-bracted buds above make each one look like a lit candle. Black, winged pods follow. It has a long history of use against ringworm, since the leaves and sap contain the antifungal compound chrysophanic acid.
