A fast-growing deciduous tree with smooth grey bark studded with prickles and large three-parted leaves. In the dry season it drops its leaves and covers the bare branches with dense clusters of scarlet flowers whose curved petals give the name tiger's claw. Long dark pods follow, holding reddish-brown bean-like seeds that are probably poisonous.
