Dwarf Coconut Trees

Cocos nucifera L.
FamilyArecaceae
EspañolPalma de coco
AlsoCoconut palm, Dwarf coconut, Dwarf Coconut

The coconut is a single-trunked palm with a base swollen at the ground and a crown of large pinnate leaves. Dwarf forms rarely exceed about 8 m and come into fruit earlier than tall coconuts, which makes them suited to gardens, though their meat is regarded as lower quality for commercial use. Tall coconuts can exceed 24 m and live around 90 years, bearing up to 50 nuts a year once mature.

Worth knowingThe genus name comes from the Spanish coco, a monkey face, because of the three eyes on the shell; nuts can float for up to 110 days, long enough to drift about 4,800 km on ocean currents.
